Yield performance of dedicated industrial crops on low?temperature characterized marginal agricultural land in Europe – a review

نویسندگان

چکیده

About 8.37 Mha of European agricultural land is affected by low temperature and thus considered marginal land. This allows for industrial crop cultivation without competing directly with food security or biodiversity conservation. However, little known regarding the yield performance crops under conditions. study therefore compiles available data discusses them in context remaining uncertainties. Overall, 12 were identified as relevant Europe: giant reed (Arundo donax L.), camelina (Camelina sativa L. Crantz), cardoon (Cynara cardunculus crambe (Crambe abyssinica Hochst ex R.E.Fr.), cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum hemp (Cannabis miscanthus (Miscanthus spp.), poplar (Populus canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum willow (Salix L.). Good very good growth suitability was indicated camelina, upland switchgrass, grass, willow. Nevertheless, it also found that there are strong variations within selected crops. Little information on effects marginality constraints biomass quality. The uncertainty resulting from this fragmentary situation represents one greatest challenges to large-scale implementation across prone temperatures, especially climate change. © 2021 Authors. Carbon consequences and agricultural implications of growing biofuel crops on marginal agricultural lands in China.

Using marginal agricultural lands to grow energy crops for biofuel feedstocks is a promising option to meet the biofuel needs in populous China without causing further food shortages or environmental problems. Here we quantify the effects of growing switchgrass and Miscanthus on Chinese marginal agricultural lands on biomass production and carbon emissions with a global-scale biogeochemical mod...

Land Use, Yield and Quality Changes of Minor Field Crops: Is There Superseded Potential to Be Reinvented in Northern Europe?

Diversification of agriculture was one of the strengthened aims of the greening payment of European Agricultural Policy (CAP) as diversification provides numerous ecosystems services compared to cereal-intensive crop rotations. This study focuses on current minor crops in Finland that have potential for expanded production and considers changes in their cropping areas, yield trends, breeding ga...

Dedicated Industrial Oilseed Crops as Metabolic Engineering Platforms for Sustainable Industrial Feedstock Production

Feedstocks for industrial applications ranging from polymers to lubricants are largely derived from petroleum, a non-renewable resource. Vegetable oils with fatty acid structures and storage forms tailored for specific industrial uses offer renewable and potentially sustainable sources of petrochemical-type functionalities. A wide array of industrial vegetable oils can be generated through biot...
